@Nurturing Left-Handers to Fulfilfillment
Left-handedness, occurring in about 10% of the population, is linked to brain lateralization, where the right hemisphere often dominates, influencing skills like creativity, spatial awareness, and holistic thinking.
Research suggests that left-handers may have advantages in certain areas, like visual-spatial tasks such as map reading, puzzle solving, geometry, construction, video games, driving, drawing and divergent thinking, but they might face challenges in a predominantly right-handed world, leading to adaptations in motor skills and learning.
Despite myths associating left-handedness with negative traits, it’s simply a natural variation in human neurodiversity, with no inherent disadvantages.
Nurturing left-handed children to fulfilling their innate potential therefore, involves understanding and accommodating their unique needs. These are some of the best ways to support them:
📌Provide Left-Handed Tools: Supply them with left-handed scissors, notebooks, and other tools designed for left-handed use to make tasks easier and more comfortable.
📌Adjust Writing Techniques: Teach them to tilt the paper to the right and hold the pen or pencil in a way that prevents smudging and discomfort. Consider handwriting programs designed for left-handed children.
📌Arrange Seating for Comfort: Ensure they sit on the left side of right-handed peers to avoid bumping elbows and allow them the space they need to write comfortably.
📌Encourage Their Hobbies: If they show an interest in sports or musical instruments, find left-handed versions of the equipment or adapt techniques to suit their handedness.
📌Be Patient with Handwriting: Left-handed children might take longer to develop neat handwriting. Offer patience and support as they practice.
📌Promote Fine Motor Skills: Engage them in activities that strengthen their fine motor skills, like drawing, puzzles, or using clay, which can aid in their overall coordination.
📌Educate Others: Make sure teachers and caregivers are aware of their left-handedness and how to support them in the classroom or other activities.
📌Celebrate Their Uniqueness: Reinforce that being left-handed is simply one of the many things that make them special. Parents and society should celebrate rather than stigmatize or seek to change them. Be proud of their uniqueness. It is not a defect rather it's one of nature's diversity in strength. Share famous left-handed role models to inspire them including former Governor of Lagos State - Babatunde Fashola, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Angelina Jolie, Leonardo da Vinci amongst others.
By understanding and meeting the unique needs of left-handed children, you can help them fulfil their God given potential, feel confident and capable in a world designed for right-handers.
