@Nigeria at 64: A Call for Compassion and Action
As we mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, we find ourselves reflecting not only on our nation’s journey but also on the harsh economic realities that millions of Nigerians face today. While we celebrate the resilience and strength of our people, it is impossible to ignore the growing groans of hardship that echo across the country.
Many Nigerians are struggling to meet even the most basic needs. The relentless rise in food prices, transportation costs driven by astronomical petrol prices, increased healthcare expenses, and electricity tariffs have compounded to make life nearly unbearable for the average citizen. Families are increasingly falling into the poverty bracket, and hunger is becoming a constant companion for many. This erosion of well-being is happening despite the yet-to-be-implemented minimum wage increase, which is already inadequate in light of these economic pressures.
Federal intervention efforts, while commendable, are proving insufficient. The government's measures to cushion the effects of subsidy removal and inflation have been mere drops in the ocean. More than ever, the people need a federal government that is empathetic, sensitive, and responsive to their plight. The call for endurance and patience has worn thin for citizens who are hungry, disillusioned, and desperate for immediate ease.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a people's leader reputed for being compassionate and having the best intentions for Nigeria, must demonstrate a stronger commitment to the well-being of the people. While policies aimed at economic reform are necessary, they should not come at the expense of the masses. The ongoing hardship is not only unbearable but also dehumanizing, and there is an urgent need to relax and reverse some of the policies that have exacerbated the pain and suffering of Nigerians.
For instance, the electricity tariff hikes and the forced migration of underserved communities to higher payment bands must be addressed. The Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, has failed to offer the leadership, empathy and vision needed to resolve these pressing issues and should be replaced. His cluelessness is not only hurting Nigerians but is also damaging the credibility of the government. A host of other underperforming ministers should be shown the door.
Equally concerning is the impunity and mismanagement of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The unchecked greed and corruption within the organization have led to consistently high petrol prices, despite claims to the contrary. This has been a major factor in the suffering of Nigerians, and it is imperative that the top management of NNPC be removed and held accountable.
Price control on essential commodities, such as food and healthcare, should be strictly enforced to prevent exploitation by traders. The impact of removing import duties on certain food items is yet to be felt, and it is clear that local rice production has not met the needs of the populace. In light of this, reopening land borders for rice importation is a necessary step to curb the exorbitant cost of basic food items, such as a 50kg bag of rice now selling for ₦100,000.
Businesses, which are the lifeblood of our economy, need more incentives to survive and thrive. Conducive environments, tax breaks, and lifeline for companies of all sizes will help retain jobs and even create more opportunities for employment. Unemployment remains a critical issue, and without serious interventions, the problem will only worsen.
State Governors, all of who are particularly the biggest beneficiaries of the subsidy removal, must step up and provide tangible relief to their people. The time for photo-ops and hollow promises is over; action is required, and it is required now!
Despite these challenges, Project Youth Fulfil (PYoF) is urging fellow Nigerians including youths not to lose hope. Our nation has weathered storms before, and with continued prayer, unity, and perseverance, better days are ahead. And for those better days to arrive, our leaders must lead with compassion, wisdom, honesty and urgency.
As we celebrate Nigeria at 64, let this be a moment for both reflection and action. The welfare of the people must remain at the heart of governance, for that is the true purpose of leadership.
May Nigeria rise above these challenges, and may we soon celebrate not just our independence, but a nation where every citizen thrives!
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!
