@Celebrating the Silver Jubilee of International Mother Language Day 2025
Language is more than just a tool for communication; it is the essence of identity, culture, and heritage. Every year on February 21st, the world observes International Mother Language Day to promote linguistic diversity and multilingual education. The 2025 edition marks a significant milestone—the 25th anniversary, also known as the Silver Jubilee, of this important observance.
This year’s theme, “Linguistic Diversity for Inclusive Education and Social Development,” highlights the role of native languages in ensuring equal learning opportunities and fostering social cohesion. When education is delivered in a learner’s mother tongue, comprehension and cognitive development improve, leading to better academic performance and long-term social benefits.
International Mother Language Day was first proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999 to advocate for linguistic and cultural diversity. The chosen date, February 21st, commemorates the 1952 Bengali Language Movement in Bangladesh, where students sacrificed their lives while demanding official recognition for their native language, Bengali. Their bravery became a symbol of the global struggle for linguistic rights.
In the modern world, many indigenous languages face the threat of extinction due to globalization and cultural assimilation. When a language disappears, a unique way of understanding the world is lost forever. This year’s celebration serves as a call to action for individuals, communities, and governments to protect and promote native languages through policies, education, and cultural initiatives.
As the world marks this Silver Jubilee, the focus must be on making education truly inclusive by embracing linguistic diversity. Schools should integrate mother tongue-based instruction, and societies should encourage the preservation of native languages. In doing so, we ensure that every voice, regardless of the language it speaks, is heard, valued, and empowered.
