@Manner of Approach: The Key to Favourable Outcomes
In the African context, respect is a fundamental virtue that governs relationships and interactions. Your manner of approach—how you communicate and act—can either open doors for you or shut them permanently. Whether you are engaging with older adults or peers, wisdom and humility must define your approach if you desire favourable results.
▪️Respect in Communication
The way you speak to people determines how they will respond to you. When addressing older adults, ensure your tone is calm, polite, and filled with deference. Words like "sir," "ma," and "please" should not be absent from your vocabulary. Even among your peers, the right choice of words can foster mutual respect and understanding. Avoid being brash, rude, or condescending, as such attitudes can create unnecessary conflicts.
Listening is just as important as speaking. When engaging in a conversation, allow the other person to express their thoughts fully before responding. This shows that you value their opinion, which, in turn, makes them more receptive to yours.
▪️Approach Through Action
Beyond words, your body language and actions speak volumes. A courteous greeting, a gentle nod, or even a warm handshake can leave a lasting impression. When seeking guidance, correction, or favour from an older adult, ensure you do so with a posture of humility. Standing with arms crossed, rolling your eyes, or using dismissive gestures can be interpreted as arrogance, even if unintended.
If you need assistance from your peers, show consideration and respect in your request. People are more willing to help when they feel respected and valued. Instead of making demands, ask politely and show gratitude when they oblige.
▪️The Power of the Right Approach
In Africa, elders hold great influence, and many decisions are based on how you present yourself. A humble and respectful approach can earn you mentorship, guidance, and opportunities that an aggressive or careless manner would block. Even among friends and colleagues, the right approach builds trust, strengthens relationships, and paves the way for collaboration.
You must understand that being right is not always enough; how you present your thoughts matters. A wise person knows when to speak, how to speak, and the best way to act in every situation. By mastering the right manner of approach, you set yourself apart as a person of wisdom, character, and influence.
Let your words be gracious, your actions considerate, and your presence one that commands respect. The right manner of approach will always make a difference in your journey.
