@The Disgrace of Disrespect: A Lesson from Nnamdi Azikiwe University

Respect for elders is a fundamental value in African society. It is an ethical principle deeply woven into the cultural fabric of Nigeria. When you disregard this principle, you not only dishonor yourself but also diminish the essence of societal decency. The recent incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, where a female undergraduate publicly disrespected a senior lecturer during a TikTok live video, is a stark reminder of the growing disregard for authority and decorum among some young people.

The viral video that captured the appalling behavior sparked outrage, and rightfully so. A university is a place of learning, not just in academics but also in character and responsibility. If you lack the ability to show basic courtesy to those who impart knowledge, you prove yourself unworthy of the very education you seek. The school authority took swift action, conducting a thorough investigation and finding the student guilty as charged. Her immediate expulsion serves as a strong warning to others who might be tempted to engage in such disgraceful conduct.

Nigeria is a country where elders are revered, and teachers hold a special place not just in the lives of students but also in the society. You must understand that being a student does not grant you the license to insult or ridicule those who have dedicated their lives to shaping your future. When you choose to make a mockery of a teacher for social media clout, you demonstrate ignorance, emptiness, immaturity, and a lack of home training.

The consequences of disrespect are severe. This young woman has not only lost her place in a prestigious institution but has also tainted her reputation. The digital world never forgets. What seemed like a moment of amusement has now defined her in a negative light. Employers, institutions, and society at large take character seriously. If you fail to cultivate respect, you risk doors shutting in your face before you even get the chance to knock.

You must take this incident as a wake-up call. Social media should not be a platform for disgraceful acts but a tool for growth, learning, and positive engagement. The younger generation must reclaim the values of humility, courtesy, and discipline. The expulsion of this student is a reminder that actions have consequences. Disrespecting a teacher—or any elder—is an unpardonable offense that society will not tolerate.

Let this be a lesson to you. Respect is not optional; it is essential. The dignity of teachers and elders must be upheld at all times. If you fail to show respect, you must be ready to face the consequences.
