@Tinubu’s Midterm Test
@Tinubu’s Midterm Test: The Triumphs, The Trials, And The Tasks Ahead
Two years down the line, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has faced its most formidable examination yet — governing a nation of over 200 million amidst high expectations, economic volatility, and deep-seated structural challenges. Yet, in the crucible of national leadership, the fire has revealed both gold and gravel. It is only just to weigh his midterm report not only by the applause of statistics but by the pulse of the people.
The removal of fuel subsidy, though harsh on the average Nigerian, has shattered the decades-old fortress of corruption that fattened the powerful few at the expense of the masses. For once, Nigeria’s wealth is not being siphoned through phoney imports and shadowy cabals. The gain? More funds now flow to the federal, state, and local government treasuries — funds that should be channeled toward real development.
A bold stroke was also the unification of the exchange rate, ending the opaque dual system that bred arbitrariness and economic sabotage. It wasn’t without pain, but it was a necessary surgery for a sick economy. The signs of recovery are beginning to show. For the first time in Nigeria’s history, the nation recorded a trade surplus exceeding $5 billion in Q4 of 2024. Foreign reserves are rising. Debt burden has been slashed by $14 billion. And for once, we are no longer indebted to the IMF — a feat that restores our economic dignity.
The government has also opened a path of hope to students and entrepreneurs alike. The Students Loan Fund offers educational access where financial walls once stood. Grants for SMEs provide fresh wind beneath the wings of small businesses. Federal technical schools have been made free, and their students now to receive monthly stipends of ₦45,000 — a first in our annals. More tertiary institutions have been upgraded or newly established, and the inclusion of young people in governance is no longer an aspiration but a reality.
Infrastructure is no longer just a campaign cliché — roads are springing to life across the land. Regional development commissions for all six geopolitical zones have been instituted. Tax reforms are being rolled out to ensure equity and economic stimulation. And for the first time in decades, a path is being cleared toward true local government autonomy — the closest governance to the people.
Yet, while the macroeconomic indicators are improving, the true test lies not in graphs or speeches, but in the lives of the people. If the head is healing but the feet still bleed, the journey is not yet successful. Nigerians must see and feel the change — in their pockets, in their kitchens, in the markets, and under their roofs.
Food prices though, especially rice, is marginally falling yet remain unbearably high. Electricity supply remains epileptic and tariffs unreasonably inflated. The hardship is real and biting. The Power Minister, Adebayo Adelabu, has clearly proven inadequate for the demands of the hour. He must be replaced with someone humane, competent, and visionary — someone who understands that light is not just electrical, but symbolic of progress.
State governors, flush with increased allocations since subsidy removal, must not remain silent beneficiaries. They must roll up their sleeves and ease the burdens of their people. It is not enough to blame Abuja when they have been empowered to act.
The citizens too have a duty — to stay awake, to demand accountability, and to participate constructively in the democratic process. Leadership thrives when followership is discerning, vigilant, and active.
In sum, President Tinubu’s midterm scorecard reveals a reformist spirit with audacity and vision. However, the next half must be about translation — from policy to plate, from promises to provision, from growth to gladness.
The journey of rebuilding a nation is not a sprint. It is a relay. And in this leg of the race, the baton must be passed from political will to practical wellbeing.
Let Nigeria not only rise — let her people rise with her.
