@Arresting The Tide Of Suicide Among Nigeria’s Promising Youths

It was a Saturday soaked in sorrow. A brilliant, fresh graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State took his own life, leaving a trail of heartbreak, unanswered questions, and a deepening fear that something is dreadfully wrong. A life filled with potential silenced in a moment of despair. A voice that once echoed in lecture halls now lost in the shadow of suicide. This is not just a personal tragedy—it is a national alarm bell.

What drives a young mind—shaped by years of learning, effort, and dreams—to such a final act? For some, it is the heavy burden of expectation. For others, it is the silent scream of loneliness, the crushing weight of financial strain, or the lingering darkness of depression that remains unspoken and untreated. Many students are overwhelmed by academic rigours, trapped in emotional isolation, or paralyzed by fear of an uncertain future.

Our campuses must not become corridors of quiet suffering. The idea that only “the strong survive” must give way to the truth that even the strong can stumble. What our youths need is not just instruction but compassion. Not only degrees, but direction. They need spaces where it is safe to speak, to cry, to seek help without judgment.

A new dawn is possible. Mental health clubs can blossom on campuses, offering refuge and real help. Schools must be more than citadels of knowledge—they must be communities of care. Government and school managements should prioritise accessible counselling centres with professionals who listen, not lecture. Lecturers and staff should be trained to spot emotional distress and act with empathy.

Fellow students should watch over one another—not as mere friends, but as lifeguards guarding fragile souls. Youth organisations, faith leaders, and even alumni networks must rise and rally resources to support those silently sinking. Social media should become a tool for hope, not harassment; a channel of upliftment, not pressure.

The story of that young graduate should stir more than mourning—it should spark movement. A movement where no student is left to wrestle alone. A movement that replaces silence with support, shame with strength, despair with direction.

To every young soul reading this: your life matters. Your presence is a gift. Even if clouds gather, light still lies ahead. Hold on. Speak out. Seek help. You are never alone.

Let us, together, arrest this tide. Let us stand as builders of hope, bearers of light, and breakers of the chain of suicide. Nigeria needs her young people alive—not as fading names in sad headlines, but as rising stars shaping a future filled with life, impact, and fulfilment.

Yours in fulfilment,
