@Emotional Debt: Stop Giving What Your Heart Can’t Afford
There is a silent bankruptcy that is killing dreams, draining energy, and leaving many young people emotionally stranded—it’s called emotional debt. It is what happens when you invest your emotions beyond your emotional capacity, stretch your care beyond your strength, and carry people in your heart who won’t even lift a finger for your healing.
You may not owe the bank a kobo, yet you are emotionally overdrawn.
In relationships, friendships, and even family ties, too many youths have become emotional lenders—always giving, fixing, forgiving, checking in, showing up, lifting others, while being left unnoticed, unheard, and unhealed. And when the payback doesn’t come, they crash—silently.
Young heart, you must learn this early: your emotional energy is not infinite. Love has limits. Even God sets boundaries. He gives us grace, but not without expectation. Likewise, your heart is a treasury—not a free-for-all marketplace.
When you keep giving love, time, trust, attention, kindness, loyalty, and vulnerability to someone or something that keeps taking without replenishing, you are going into emotional overdraft. That, over time, leads to resentment, bitterness, or worse—burnout.
It is not pride to say no. It is not wickedness to draw lines. It is not weakness to pause and preserve yourself.
Ask yourself:
– Are you trying to rescue someone who doesn’t want to be helped?
– Are you constantly apologizing just to keep peace, while losing your inner peace?
– Are you the only one always calling, always caring, always compromising?
If yes, you are in emotional debt—and it’s time to stop.
Withdraw from the overdraft. Balance your emotional books. Reclaim your strength. Know this: you are not selfish for protecting your sanity. You are wise.
Not every call must be answered. Not every tear must be mopped. Not every fight is yours to fix. You can love people and still step back. You can forgive and still walk away. You can be kind without being a victim.
This is your reminder: stop giving what your heart can’t afford. Preserve your peace. Prioritize your healing. Surround yourself with people who don’t just take from you—but pour into you too.
You were not created to die saving people who are busy killing you with ingratitude and inconsistency.
Let love be mutual. Let effort be shared. Let respect be reciprocal.
And until it is—guard your heart, for out of it flows the issues of your life.
