@Still Worth It: Why Education Remains a Wise Investment in a Tough Nigeria

It is easy to ask, “What is the point of education in Nigeria today?” when PhD holders beg for jobs, graduates roam the streets, and some school dropouts seem to be swimming in success. In a nation where systems often fail and effort isn’t always rewarded, the question seems valid. Yet, beneath the frustration lies a deeper truth—education may not always guarantee wealth, but ignorance guarantees more hardship.

Let us speak clearly and boldly: certificates are not useless. They are not worthless. They are simply no longer enough on their own. The world has shifted, and the definition of success has expanded beyond formal schooling. Yet that shift is not a signal to abandon learning—it is a call to redefine how we learn, why we learn, and what we do with what we learn.

Going to school is not just about big grammar or sitting in an office. It is about sharpening your thinking, expanding your worldview, and developing the discipline to chase meaningful goals. Education equips you not just for employment, but for engagement—with society, with opportunities, and with your own potential.

True, the system is broken. Merit doesn’t always lead to money. Hard work doesn’t always lead to high places. However, ignorance is not a better option. A country where more youths choose shortcuts over study is a country digging its own grave. When we stop valuing learning, we stop building the future.

Certificates do not promise riches. They provide platforms. And on those platforms, the wise build skills, the bold pursue innovation, and the diligent create new paths. What must change is our mindset—education is not just school; it is skills, exposure, ideas, network, and resilience.

It is true that some who didn’t attend school are rich. Yet many of them are now paying to give their children the very education they missed. That is not coincidence—it is wisdom. They know that sustainable wealth grows faster with knowledge than without it.

Project Youth Fulfil believes that education must evolve, not end. Youth must combine certificates with creativity, and degrees with digital skills. You must use your brain, hands, and heart—not just your file of results. The future belongs to those who are not only educated, but empowered.

So no, don’t drop the books. Pick up the right mindset alongside them. Don’t waste time memorizing without understanding. Learn to create, communicate, and contribute.

One day, when the systems are repaired and the tide turns, it will be the educated and equipped who will rise to lead, to rebuild, and to fulfil.

So study—not just for survival, but for significance. Not to impress, but to impact.

Yours in fulfilment,
