@Confronting the Menace of Drug Abuse Among Youth
In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed an alarming rise in drug abuse among her youth, despite deliberate campaigns, interventions, and community efforts to curb this growing crisis. The menace has spread like wildfire, with substances such as “colos” and other harmful drugs becoming the order of the day. These substances are not merely recreational—they are destiny-destroying poisons that cut short potential, truncate dreams, and silence voices that should have been heard on the platforms of greatness.
The effects of rampant drug abuse on individuals are devastating. A youth hooked on drugs often loses the clarity of thought, moral restraint, and the drive for meaningful pursuits. Academic performance declines, relationships collapse, and health deteriorates rapidly. With every puff, sniff, or swallow, a young person gradually exchanges the wealth of their future for the emptiness of a fleeting high. Dreams of becoming leaders, innovators, and nation-builders are often dashed on the altar of addiction.
The impact extends beyond the individual, spilling into the very fabric of society. Communities grapple with rising crime, violence, and insecurity, often perpetrated by young people under the influence. Families are torn apart, parents are left heartbroken, and the national economy suffers as a vital segment of the workforce is lost to substances. The nation cannot rise when its youth, who should be the arrowheads of development, are chained in the pit of addiction.
Yet, this is not a battle that cannot be won. To chart a way out, a multi-pronged approach is needed. First, prevention must be prioritized through aggressive sensitization campaigns—creative, relatable, and consistent messages that counter the glamorization of drugs. Secondly, rehabilitation centers should be strengthened and made youth-friendly, offering not just medical help but also mentorship and skill acquisition that restore dignity and purpose. Parents and guardians must rise to their role as primary influencers, building trust and open communication with their children. Communities, schools, faith-based organizations, and NGOs must synergize to form strong support systems that make it harder for young people to fall through the cracks.
We must also commend the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) under the leadership of retired General Buba Marwa for their renewed vigor and results-driven approach in tackling this menace. Their dedication, arrests, sensitization programs, and bold strategies deserve national applause. Yet, there is more ground to cover. NDLEA must deepen its grassroots engagements, broaden its rehabilitation drives, and continue to dismantle the networks that supply these harmful substances to our youth.
Above all, government must go beyond rhetoric. Policies must not remain on paper but must be seen in action—firm enforcement against the production, distribution, and sale of these drugs, while genuine opportunities for youth empowerment must be created to reduce idleness and frustration, which often fuel addiction.
And now, to you—the Nigerian youth: hear this loud and clear! You are not created for the gutter of addiction; you are created for the glory of destiny. You are not born for smoke, powders, and pills; you are born for innovation, leadership, and greatness. Do not let a stick, a capsule, or a bottle steal your tomorrow. Do not trade your crown for crumbs, or your throne for thrills that last only minutes but leave scars for a lifetime.
Rise! Rise above peer pressure, rise above deception, rise above the lies that drugs make you stronger or freer. Freedom is not in substances—it is in discipline. Strength is not in intoxication—it is in vision. True joy is not in a high—it is in fulfilment. Every time you say no to drugs, you say yes to your destiny. Every time you walk away from a high, you walk closer to the heights of greatness.
Nigeria is waiting. Your families are watching. History is recording. And the future is calling. Youth of Nigeria—this is your moment! Break free from the chains of addiction, stand tall with courage, and let your brilliance light the way for generations to come.
The call is urgent, the responsibility is collective, and the time to act is now. Together, let us reclaim our youth from the claws of drug abuse and march boldly toward the path of fulfilment.
Yours in fulfilment,
