When Power Overrides Principle And The World Looks Away

@When Power Overrides Principle And The World Looks Away

The world is watching another troubling chapter in international politics unfold, and we cannot pretend it does not concern us. The reported elimination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, through coordinated military strikes linked to the administration of Donald Trump and the government of Benjamin Netanyahu has raised serious global questions about the conduct of powerful nations such as the United States and Israel in their engagement with sovereign states like Iran. It may appear decisive. It may even look strategic. Yet beneath the surface lies a deeper question about what kind of global order is being shaped before our very eyes.

We have been told that democracy stands for rule of law, respect for institutions, and the sanctity of sovereignty. If that is true, then forceful removal or targeted killing of a sitting head of state demands moral interrogation. When strength becomes the primary argument, legality begins to tremble. When military capability replaces patient diplomacy, the foundations of decency in global affairs start to crack. Power without restraint rarely builds lasting peace; it often plants seeds of prolonged instability. The tensions surrounding Trump's forceful removal and arrest of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, as well as the prolonged military conflict involving Vladimir Putin in Ukraine, further reflect a growing trend where the use of force risks replacing diplomacy in resolving political disagreements.

History has shown that actions taken in the name of security can generate consequences that outlive the architects of those decisions. Temporary victories may satisfy political narratives, yet resentment, retaliation, and regional destabilisation often follow. We cannot build a peaceful world by normalising the idea that the strong may redraw the political landscape of the weak at will. Once that door is opened, no nation is permanently safe from similar justification.

Respect for sovereignty is not a favour granted to small or unpopular states; it is a principle that protects the entire international system. Disobedience to global norms weakens the very democracy many superpowers claim to defend. Military strength should be a shield of last resort, not a hammer of convenience. A wiser path forward calls for renewed diplomacy, strengthened international institutions, equal application of international law, and courageous global voices that insist on restraint over retaliation.

Our generation must learn to question not only the actions of so-called adversaries, but also the conduct of those who claim moral superiority. Peace is not sustained by dominance alone. It is sustained by principle, accountability, and mutual respect. When power overrides principle and the world looks away, the cost is never temporary. It is generational.
