Your Safety Is No Longer Someone Else's Responsibility
@Your Safety Is No Longer Someone Else's Responsibility
The recent abductions of teachers, students and pupils in parts of Oyo and Borno States have reinforced a difficult reality: insecurity is no longer a distant headline. Places once considered safe are increasingly vulnerable. Schools, markets, farms, highways, worship centres and communities now require a higher level of awareness than ever before. This is not the time for panic, endless blame or partisan arguments. It is the time for vigilance, preparedness and responsible action.
Security is no longer a concern reserved for security agencies alone. It has become a personal responsibility that every young person must take seriously. Pay attention to your surroundings wherever you go. Avoid predictable routines when possible. Be cautious of lonely routes, isolated locations and unnecessary movements at odd hours. Inform trusted family members or friends of your travel plans. Keep emergency contacts accessible. Most importantly, avoid sharing your location publicly on social media while you are still at a particular place. Information carelessly exposed online can become valuable intelligence in the wrong hands.
Schools, workplaces and public gathering centres must also embrace a culture of preparedness. Know the emergency exits in buildings you frequently use. Be observant. Report suspicious activities, unusual movements or unfamiliar persons attempting to gather sensitive information. Learn basic emergency response measures. Many security incidents are preceded by warning signs that people ignore simply because they assume someone else will take responsibility.
Communities become safer when residents know one another and look out for one another. Build healthy relationships with neighbours. Participate in lawful community safety initiatives. Encourage information sharing and prompt reporting of security concerns. Criminals often succeed where people are disconnected, indifferent or unwilling to speak up. A vigilant community remains one of the strongest layers of protection against insecurity.
The goal is not to live in fear. The goal is to live prepared. Fear paralyses; preparedness empowers. Every young person must understand that security consciousness is now a life skill. In uncertain times, your awareness, discretion, discipline and readiness may prove to be some of the most valuable assets you possess. While you may not control every threat around you, you can certainly improve your chances of staying safe by refusing to be careless, complacent or uninformed.
