Your Life Cannot Be On Standby Until Nigeria Gets Better
@Your Life Cannot Be On Standby Until Nigeria Gets Better
There is a dangerous habit growing quietly among us: postponing life until circumstances become perfect. We tell ourselves we will start when the economy improves, succeed when opportunities become abundant, build when the system becomes favourable, or become the person we dream of becoming when Nigeria gets better. These concerns are real, and nobody should pretend that the challenges confronting young Nigerians are imaginary. Yet, waiting indefinitely for a perfect environment can turn a difficult season into a permanent excuse.
Nigeria may not be where we want her to be, but our lives cannot remain permanently suspended because the nation is struggling. Every generation has faced its own difficult circumstances. Some built businesses during recessions, acquired knowledge when resources were scarce, raised families amid uncertainty and created opportunities where none seemed to exist. Their lesson is not that hardship is acceptable; it is that hardship must not be allowed to determine the limits of human possibility.
We must therefore learn to distinguish between what we cannot control and what we can. We may not control the economy, government policies, inflation or the availability of jobs, but we can improve our skills, strengthen our character, pursue knowledge, develop relationships, create value and prepare ourselves for opportunities before they arrive. We can complain about the darkness while still carrying a torch.
The Nigeria we desire will not be built by people who waited for everything to become easy before taking responsibility. It will be built by citizens who decided to become useful even in difficult times; young people who learned, created, served, innovated and contributed despite the odds. Our personal progress and national progress are not enemies. Every competent professional, ethical entrepreneur, excellent teacher, responsible leader and innovative young person is a significant investment in the Nigeria we hope to see.
So, yes, let us demand a better Nigeria. Let us speak against injustice, poor governance and policies that make life unnecessarily difficult. However, while demanding a better country, let us also build better lives. Nigeria must get better—but your life must not remain on standby until it does. Start where you are, grow with what you have, create what you can, and keep moving.
