@Avoiding Human Trafficking

Human Trafficking feeds on the gullibility and desperation of young people and their parents for elusive greener pastures. Thereby putting themselves avoidably in the cul-de-sac of slavery, misery, prostitution, forced servitude, secret oath-taking/initiation, incommunicado, imprisonment and untimely death. This is not your destiny! Stories of regrets, sexual slavery, sorrows, tears and even deaths abound from young Nigerians who have fallen victim of the wicked, mindless and callous traffickers - from Dubai to Quatar, from Oman to Riyadh, from Iran to Jordan, from Libya to Italy and lately from Nigeria to Accra, Ghana. Avoiding the baits of human trafficking requires awareness, vigilance, and taking proactive steps to stay safe. Here are some practical tips for youths to protect themselves:

đź’ĄStay Informed: Educate yourself about the methods traffickers use to lure victims, such as false job offers, romantic relationships, or promises of a better life.

đź’ĄBe Cautious Online: Be careful about sharing personal information on social media and engaging with strangers. Traffickers often use the internet to identify and groom potential victims.

đź’ĄVerify Job Offers: If you receive a job offer, especially one that seems too good to be true, verify its legitimacy. Research the company, check reviews, and contact the company directly using official contact information.

đź’ĄTravel Safely: When traveling, especially abroad, ensure you have a secure plan, know the local emergency numbers, and stay in touch with family and friends. Avoid accepting travel offers from strangers or unverified sources.

đź’ĄTrust Your Instincts: If something feels off or too good to be true, trust your instincts, open up and seek advice from trusted adults or authorities.

đź’ĄLearn Self-Defense: Taking self-defense classes can provide you with skills to protect yourself in dangerous situations.

đź’ĄCreate a Safety Network: Keep a list of trusted contacts you can reach out to in case of an emergency. Share your plans with family or friends and check in regularly.

đź’ĄKnow Your Rights: Understand your rights and the resources available to you in your country and abroad. This includes knowing how to contact local embassies or consulates if you are traveling.

đź’ĄBe Wary of Unsolicited Offers: Be cautious of unsolicited offers for work, travel, or accommodation, especially if they require you to move to a different location mostly overseas.

đź’ĄSeek Help When Needed: If you find yourself in an uncomfortable or potentially dangerous situation, seek help immediately. Contact local authorities, hotlines, or organizations that specialize in assisting trafficking victims.

đź’ĄEducate Your Peers: Spread awareness about human trafficking among your friends and community. The more people are informed, the harder it becomes for traffickers to operate.

đź’ĄReport Suspicious Activity: If you suspect someone is being targeted or if you encounter suspicious activities, report it to the authorities - security agencies or organizations that deal with human trafficking such as National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

My dear young people,

traveling abroad is not an automatic ticket to prosperity! Don't be so desperate that you lose discernment! Your life is more important not only to your family but also to your community, the nation, and God - your Creator! Your destiny is vital to humanity! Seek a safer, legitimate, dignifying and godly way to fulfil it! Avoid being trafficked. As for you - human traffickers - nemesis and the long arm of the law shall catch up with you soon!
