 @Startling Statistics and Nigerian Youth

As the world marks the 2024 International Youth Day, here are some significant statistics about the youth in Nigeria, reflecting both their demographic weight and the socio-economic challenges they face:

📌Youth Population:

As of 2022, Nigeria's population was approximately 217 million, with youths (ages 15-35) accounting for about 70% of the total population, which translates to roughly 151 million youths.

📌Unemployment and Underemployment:

The youth unemployment rate in Nigeria was around 8.6% in the third quarter of 2023, up from 7.2% in the previous quarter.

Underemployment remains a significant issue, with many youths engaged in low-paying or part-time jobs that do not fully utilize their skills.

📌Education and Skills Development:

There is a critical need for enhanced youth empowerment through education, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, which are seen as crucial for driving economic growth and reducing unemployment.

📌Economic Migration:

A significant portion of Nigeria's youth population expresses a desire to migrate abroad in search of better opportunities. According to the World Health Organization, about 50% of Nigeria’s population would relocate if given the chance, highlighting the need for domestic economic improvements to retain young talents.

📌Youth and National Development:

With the right investments in education and skills development, Nigeria's large youth population holds the potential to significantly drive economic growth. However, without proper empowerment, this demographic could pose a substantial socio-economic burden.

These statistics underscore the importance of the formulation and implementation of targeted policies and programs to harness the potential of Nigerian youth for national development and their personal fulfilfillment. Investing in education, creating employment opportunities, and fostering an environment that supports entrepreneurial initiatives are critical steps toward leveraging the country's youthful demographic.

Happy International Youth Day 2024!
