@Suicide: Not the Option

 @Suicide: Not the Option

Life can sometimes feel overwhelming. The challenges you face—academic stress, financial struggles, marital upheaval, emotional distress, career adversity, health downturn, social stigmatisation, other life burdens—may seem unbearable. You may feel trapped, lost, or convinced that there is no way out. However, ending your life is never the answer. Suicide is a permanent response to a temporary problem, and no matter how heavy your burdens feel, there is always hope. What seems unbearable today may become a distant memory tomorrow.

Recent reports of young people taking their lives, including the tragic case of a 200-level student of the University of Ilorin who died by suicide due to financial hardship, are heartbreaking. You may relate to such struggles, but understand this: tough times do not last forever. Every challenge has an expiry date, and with the right approach, you can overcome them.

What Should You Do Instead?

▪️Speak Up and Seek Help

You are not alone. Talk to someone—a trusted friend, a family member, a counselor, or a religious leader. There is strength in sharing your pain, and help is available. People care about you more than you realize.

▪️Believe in Tomorrow

No matter how bad today looks, tomorrow holds possibilities you cannot yet see. Many who once felt hopeless later found success, happiness, and purpose. You have a bright future ahead of you, even if you cannot see it now.

▪️Find Healthy Coping Mechanisms

Engage in positive activities—reading, exercise, music, volunteering, or spiritual practices. These can provide comfort and help shift your focus from despair to hope.

▪️Seek Financial or Emotional Support

If financial hardship is weighing you down, explore available resources. Scholarships, grants, student work programs, and community support exist. Reach out to organizations, religious bodies, or even individuals who may be willing to help.

▪️Remind Yourself That You Matter

You are valuable. Your existence impacts others in ways you may never fully grasp. The world needs you, your dreams, your contributions, and your unique gifts.

No matter how hard life seems, suicide is not the option. Hold on, reach out, and remember—your story is still being written. No matter how dark the night, the sun shall rise again! A brighter chapter is ahead of you!
