@A Future Cut Short: The Tragedy of a Stray Bullet
— A PYoF Condemnatory Statement on the Unjust Killing of a WASSCE Candidate in Ibadan
Once again, the promise of a young life has been violently erased, not by the cruelty of fate, but by the recklessness of those meant to protect. A student — full of dreams, potential, and purpose — was cruelly gunned down by a stray bullet from a policeman's firearm, on his way to write his West African Senior School Certificate Examination. A moment that should have symbolized hope for his future has now been turned into the hour of his death.
This is not only a tragedy. It is a national disgrace.
Project Youth Fulfil (PYoF) stands heartbroken, yet enraged. We condemn, in the strongest terms possible, the senseless, brutal killing of this young Nigerian in the prime of his youth — a candidate of WASSCE, a twin, a son, a brother, a future leader. What sin did he commit? Was it a crime to be on a motorcycle with his father and brother? Was it wrong to seek an education in a country whose system keeps placing youth at the mercy of stray bullets and shattered systems?
We are pained. We are angry. And we demand justice.
The officer who pulled the trigger — whether in hot pursuit or cold negligence — must not go unpunished. Enough of cosmetic sanctions. Enough of shielding erring officers with excuses and bureaucratic silence. We demand a full, public, thorough, speedy and unbiased investigation into this incident. The culpable officer must be dismissed, prosecuted and sentenced according to the gravity of his crime. The family of the deceased must be compensated, not as a favor, but as a right.
This incident again reveals the deep rot in our law enforcement culture: trigger-happy officers who fire bullets before thinking, officers who chase shadows at the expense of innocent lives, and a system that trains men to shoot but not to reason.
It is time — long overdue — for the complete reformation of Nigeria’s policing system.
We call on the Nigeria Police Force, the Ministry of Police Affairs, and the Presidency to:
📌Prioritize continuous professional development for all arms-bearing officers, with a strong emphasis on human rights, emotional intelligence, and crisis de-escalation techniques.
📌Institutionalize psychological and ethical evaluations for officers before they are allowed to bear arms.
📌Enforce clear accountability mechanisms and community-based monitoring of police operations.
📌Review the rules of engagement for officers in hot pursuit to prevent reckless use of firearms in public spaces.
We must never become a nation where young people fear the uniforms meant to protect them. Every child has a right to live, to learn, to fulfil destiny — not to be hunted down by stray bullets in the name of law enforcement.
To the grieving family — we mourn with you. You are in our thoughts.
To Nigerian youths — rise, not in violence, but in voice. Demand accountability. Demand change.
To the authorities — we will not rest until this killer officer is brought to justice, not as an act of sympathy, but as a duty to the nation and its future.
Enough is enough. Protect our youth. Preserve our future.
