@May Day 2025: Honouring Nigerian Workers in Economic Discomfort
On this sacred day marked across nations, we lift our voices in salute to the resilient spirit of Nigerian workers. May 1st—Workers’ Day—is more than a date on the calendar. It is a tribute to sweat that waters progress, to hands that build dreams, and to hearts that keep beating in hope amid hardship.
PROJECT YOUTH FULFIL (PYoF) rejoices with every Nigerian worker today. From the farmer in the field to the teacher in the classroom, from the nurse on the night shift to the artisan and the hawker under the scorching sun, your labour is noble and your sacrifice undeniable.
This year’s theme—“Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate”—reminds us that the world of work is evolving and must be protected, not just in policy but in practice. True safety and health go beyond helmets and clinics. They speak to economic well-being, mental peace, and the assurance that one’s labour shall not be in vain.
The reality, however, remains stark. A great number of Nigerian workers now struggle to feed their families despite being employed. Inflation has eaten deep into earnings, and the cost of living continues to soar beyond the reach of average income. This should trouble the conscience of any leader.
Government, in all its tiers, must show greater sensitivity. It must not grow deaf to the cries of the labouring class and the masses. Salaries should truly reflect economic realities. The new minimum wage should be wholly applied not as cunningly, halfheartedly being implemented currently by State Governors and the FG. Pensions must be paid promptly. Policies must be human-centred. Those in public office must resist the temptation to be self-serving while the majority groan in lack and despair.
Private employers, too, have a responsibility. Empathy is not weakness. Humanity must not be lost in the pursuit of profit. The workplace should not become a chamber of silent suffering. Better wages, staff welfare, and respect for dignity can yield loyalty, productivity, and a healthier workforce.
Labour leadership in Nigeria must rise from the ashes of political partisanship. The platform of labour was never meant to be a vehicle for personal political ambition. It must return to the path of advocacy, integrity, and undiluted service to the working class. Workers deserve a voice that cannot be bought or ignored and a union that cannot be bent.
To all workers—remain focused. Stay diligent. Be productive and hopeful. Great nations are built by the committed and the consistent. Let not discouragement steal your fire.
To our youth—seek not only to be employed, but to be creators of value. A new mindset is required—one that explores innovation, embraces enterprise, and transforms challenges into channels of legitimate wealth.
Let this May Day not end as another ceremony. Let it stir a new awakening. Let it provoke action and inspire compassion.
To every worker across Nigeria, we say: You are seen. You are valued. You matter. Your labour shall not be lost.
Yours in fulfilment,
