Today's observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking reminds us that the greatest battle against drug abuse is not fought on the streets alone; it is first won in the mind. The 2026 theme, "World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses," is a wake-up call that while old dangers remain, new traps continue to emerge. Drug abuse does not announce itself as an enemy. It often disguises itself as fun, escape, acceptance or adventure, only to leave behind broken dreams, damaged health, shattered families and wasted potential.


Your future is too valuable to be exchanged for a temporary high. Every substance abused silently negotiates with your destiny, demanding a price that is always greater than the pleasure it promises. Many brilliant minds have watched years of hard work disappear because of one destructive habit they believed they could control. True strength is not found in experimenting with drugs; it is found in having the courage to say no when everyone else says yes. The boldest young people are not those who follow the crowd but those who confidently choose the path of wisdom, discipline and self-respect.


The fight against drug abuse cannot be left to governments or law enforcement agencies alone. Parents must nurture loving homes, teachers must continue to guide with compassion, faith leaders must uphold moral values, communities must create safe environments, and friends must become positive influences instead of silent spectators. Young people also have a responsibility to protect one another by discouraging harmful habits, speaking up when someone is struggling, and encouraging those who need help to seek treatment rather than suffer in silence.
