Every generation is quick to point accusing fingers at the failures of its leaders. We lament corruption, condemn abuse of power, criticise poor decisions, and demand better governance. Those concerns are valid. Yet, before we ask why today's leaders are failing, we must ask a more fundamental question: who is raising tomorrow's leaders?


Leadership does not suddenly emerge on the day a person assumes office. It is shaped over many years by the values absorbed at home, the discipline cultivated in school, the examples witnessed in the community, and the opportunities to serve others. A society that neglects character formation but expects ethical leadership is planting thorns while hoping to harvest roses.


Parents are the first leadership mentors. Teachers are the first nation builders. Community leaders, faith-based organisations, and the media all contribute to defining what young people admire and aspire to become. When integrity is ignored, hard work is undervalued, and dishonesty is celebrated because it brings quick rewards, we quietly prepare the next generation to repeat the very mistakes we condemn today.


If we truly desire better leaders tomorrow, we must invest intentionally in young people today. We must teach them that leadership is service, not privilege; responsibility, not entitlement; sacrifice, not self-interest. We should create environments where honesty is rewarded, competence is developed, empathy is nurtured, and accountability becomes a way of life.


The future of any nation is not determined only by those occupying leadership positions today, but by the children and young people we are shaping to occupy those positions tomorrow. Before we blame leaders, let us examine the homes we are building, the schools we are strengthening, the values we are promoting, and the examples we are setting. The leadership we desire tomorrow is being raised today.
