Learning. Leading. Leaving a Legacy.
@Learning. Leading. Leaving a Legacy.
A community does not rise above the quality of its leadership. Peace, security, good governance, environmental sustainability, public health, youth development, and social harmony are not products of chance. They are the outcomes of informed leadership, responsible citizenship, and a shared commitment to the common good. Leadership is therefore not merely about occupying an office; it is about continuously acquiring the knowledge, competence, character, and capacity to serve others with excellence.
It was with this conviction that I had the privilege of participating in the 4-Day Basic Citizenship and Leadership Training Course for Community Leaders at the Ogun State Social Development Institute, Shasha, Iperu, alongside about 1,200 community leaders from across Ogun State. The experience was far more than a training course. It was an awakening. Through engaging lectures, practical exercises, group interactions, sports, social activities, and cultural engagements, participants were exposed to the principles and prerequisites of effective leadership and reminded that great communities are intentionally built by prepared leaders.
The curriculum reflected the realities of today's society. From digital transformation for improved service delivery to youth engagement, good governance, conflict management, constitutional rights, community health promotion, community-based security, gender equality, social inclusion, protection of vulnerable groups, waste management, climate change, and environmental sustainability, every session reinforced one central message: the future of our communities depends on the quality of the leaders who guide them. Knowledge without service is incomplete, while leadership without continuous learning soon becomes ineffective.
This memorable experience would not have been possible without the goodwill of many committed institutions and individuals. I express my heartfelt appreciation to Dominion Estate CDA, for considering me worthy of sponsorship and for investing in my leadership development. I am equally grateful to the leadership of OACDC for their unwavering support and commitment to building competent community leaders. My sincere appreciation also goes to the Ogun State Government, the Ministry of Community Development and Cooperatives, the dedicated facilitators, and the management of the Ogun State Social Development Institute, Shasha, Iperu, for providing an engaging, enriching, and impactful learning environment that continues to shape the future of grassroots leadership in our State.
One lesson resonated deeply throughout the course: great leadership is built on expertise, experience, and competence. Communities flourish when leaders deliberately invest in learning before leading. Every informed decision strengthens trust. Every transparent action inspires confidence. Every act of selfless service moves society closer to sustainable development. The certificate awarded at the end of the programme is not the greatest achievement; the greatest achievement is the renewed commitment to return home and translate knowledge into meaningful action.
The call before us is clear. We must never become leaders who stop learning or citizens who stop caring. Every community deserves leaders who listen before they speak, prepare before they act, and serve before they seek recognition. When learning shapes leadership, leadership inspires service, and service transforms lives, communities flourish, nations prosper, and generations yet unborn inherit a legacy worth celebrating.
Yours in fulfilment,
