Sometimes, the young person we call stubborn is only a young person who has been crying for help in a language we never bothered to understand. The one we call lazy may be exhausted from fighting battles nobody knows about. The one we label a failure may simply have failed too many times without anyone staying long enough to tell them, “Try again.” And the one we dismiss because they have nothing today may be carrying a dream that could change everything tomorrow. Sadly, we are often quick to judge a young person by what they have become, while forgetting to ask what happened to them along the way.

There are young people who go home every night carrying dreams bigger than their pockets. They watch others move forward while they remain trapped by circumstances they did not choose. Some have brilliant minds but no one to guide them. Some have talent but no platform. Some have ideas but no opportunity. Some are quietly losing confidence because every adult around them has told them what they cannot become. And sometimes, all a young person needs is one person who looks beyond the rough edges and says, “I know you can become more.”

We must remember that a seed does not resemble the tree it will become. A child with a broken uniform may one day wear a uniform of leadership. The young person sitting quietly at the back of the classroom may one day stand before thousands. The boy everyone has already counted out may one day become the man whose story gives another boy the courage to survive. The girl whose voice nobody listens to today may one day speak for an entire generation. We must stop demanding that young people prove their future before we give them a chance to build it.

And perhaps the saddest thing is that we may never know how many great leaders we have already lost—not because they lacked ability, but because nobody believed in them early enough. Some dreams died quietly in overcrowded classrooms. Some talents disappeared beneath poverty. Some brilliant minds were buried under rejection. Some young people simply stopped trying because, after hearing “you cannot” enough times, they eventually believed it. Imagine how painful it would be to discover years later that the person we ignored was carrying the very solution we were praying for.

So, before we dismiss that young person, pause. Before we mock the dream, listen. Before we condemn the mistake, teach. Before we write someone off, remember that growth is rarely beautiful at the beginning. The young person standing before us today is not the final version of who they can become. Give them guidance. Give them room to grow. Give them another chance. Give them someone to believe in them. Because one day, when that forgotten young person rises, we may proudly say, “We knew them when they were young.” And somewhere in our hearts, we may also have to ask ourselves the painful question: “What if we had believed in them sooner?”
