There is a troubling point at which political disagreement ceases to be about ideas and becomes an emotional resistance to anything good happening under the leadership we oppose. At that point, we no longer ask whether a reform is working, whether an institution is improving, whether the economy is recovering or whether lives are getting better. We ask only one question: Who is getting the credit? If the answer is someone we did not support, some of us would rather see the achievement diminished, denied or buried. That is not political consciousness. It is partisan captivity. It is the moment political loyalty begins to compete with common sense.

A mature citizen should be able to say, “I did not vote for this leader. I disagree with his ideology. I remain critical of his government. Yet, where he has done well, I will acknowledge it.” That is not betrayal. It is intellectual honesty. No leader is entirely good or entirely bad, and no administration owns either the failures or successes of an entire nation. When roads are built, hospitals equipped, schools constructed, institutions strengthened, opportunities created, investments attracted or meaningful economic reforms implemented, the benefits belong to the people. A national achievement does not become a political party's private property simply because its government delivered it.

Sometimes, the folly of political hatred becomes most apparent when reality confronts us in our everyday lives. You travel comfortably on a road built by the politician or political party you despise. You take your child to a school built or renovated under that administration. You receive treatment in a hospital equipped through its intervention. You establish a business, make a profit, secure an investment or create employment because reforms opened new possibilities in the economy. Yet, because the person who made it possible is your political enemy, you refuse to acknowledge that anything good happened. How strange it is to reject the builder while gladly using the bridge he built to cross your own river.

There is something deeply dangerous about wishing for your country to fail merely because your preferred political idol is not at the helm. When we celebrate bad news because it embarrasses an opposing government, dismiss every achievement as propaganda, or secretly hope reforms collapse so we can say, “I told you so,” we have crossed a dangerous line. The defeat of your political opponent is not the victory of your country. Democracy gives us the right to disagree, scrutinise, protest, criticise and vote differently. It does not give us the moral right to hate our own progress. We must learn to hold leaders accountable without becoming blind to their achievements and challenge bad policies without sabotaging good ones.

One day, we must learn to ask not merely, “Who did it?” but “Did it help the people?” If your political enemy builds the road you travel, equips the hospital where you are treated, builds the school your children attend, or reforms the economy from which your business, investment or livelihood benefits, acknowledging that achievement does not make you his supporter. It makes you an honest citizen. Let us never become so partisan that our enemy's success becomes our country's failure. When the country wins, we all win.
