One Day, We Will Miss The Life We Are Complaining About Today
@One Day, We Will Miss The Life We Are Complaining About Today
One day, we will understand that we were not simply passing through those moments—we were living them. The messy kitchen. The noisy children. The crowded family house. The endless responsibilities. The irritating phone calls. The friends who would not leave. The difficult seasons. The people whose presence sometimes felt ordinary. One day, some of these things will disappear, and the silence that replaces them may be louder than all the noise we once complained about.
One day, we may sit alone with old photographs, forgotten messages and fading memories, wishing desperately for something money cannot buy: one more ordinary day. Not a perfect day. Not a day without problems. Just one more day when everyone was still here. One more meal around the same table. One more conversation. One more laugh from the person whose laughter we once took for granted. One more hug. One more opportunity to say the words we assumed we would always have time to say.
Perhaps that is the cruelest thing about time. It does not always announce the last time. The last embrace may feel ordinary. The last family gathering may look like every other gathering. The last “Take care of yourself” may sound like a sentence we have heard a thousand times. We rarely know when an ordinary moment is secretly becoming a memory. We only discover its value when it has crossed the boundary between what we have and what we had.
So, while the people we love are still within reach, let us love them deliberately. Call that person. Visit that parent. Hold that child. Sit beside that spouse. Check on that friend. Take the photograph. Say the thank you. Apologise while there is still someone to apologise to. Forgive while there is still someone to forgive. Stop postponing the affection that takes only seconds to give. Life can wait for some ambitions. Some conversations cannot wait forever.
Please, don't wait for a funeral before you realise you should have called. Don't wait for an empty chair before you appreciate who used to sit there. Don't wait for an old photograph to become the only place you can still see someone's face. Don't wait until you are standing over a grave, holding back tears, wishing you could trade every achievement you ever pursued for five more minutes with the person lying beneath you.
Go now. Call them. Knock on the door. Sit beside them. Hold them tightly. Say what your heart has been postponing.
Tell them you love them while your voice can still reach their ears.
Give them their flowers while they can still smell them.
Make the memories now.
One day, memories may be all you have. And when that day comes, no amount of regret will reopen a door, make a dead phone ring, bring back a departed voice, or give you another chance to say, “I love you.”
Do not wait for “once upon a time” to become the story of the life you failed to appreciate while it was still happening.
