@When Our Culture Becomes A Bridge Instead Of A Wall

A people who forget their culture do not merely lose songs, languages, festivals, or traditional attire; they lose the stories that explain who they are and the wisdom that helped their ancestors survive. Every language we allow to die without passing it on, every tradition we abandon without understanding its value, and every elder whose knowledge we dismiss is a page torn from the book of our collective identity. Culture is not an ornament we display when convenient. It is the memory, dignity, and inheritance of a people. To preserve it is to tell the generations yet unborn: “You came from somewhere. Your story matters.”

Yet our heritage must never become a weapon against our neighbours. What is the value of being proud of our language if we use it to mock another person's accent? What is the honour in celebrating our traditions if we despise the customs of others? What kind of cultural confidence requires us to make another person feel inferior? Our culture should give us roots, not chains; confidence, not contempt; identity, not hostility. We can love our own heritage without insulting another's. We can protect our traditions without closing our minds. We can stand firmly in who we are while extending a hand to those who are different.

This responsibility cannot be outsourced. Parents and elders must tell the stories, teach the languages, preserve the crafts, and explain the values behind the customs before the knowledge disappears into silence. Schools must make room for cultural learning, not as empty ceremony, but as a living connection between generations. Young people must stop seeing every inherited tradition as outdated and every foreign influence as automatically superior. Communities must create spaces where culture is celebrated, shared, and understood—not used as a boundary marker for exclusion. Let us preserve what is valuable, reform what causes harm, and pass forward an inheritance that strengthens rather than diminishes humanity.

Our culture should tell the world where we come from, not prevent us from discovering how much further we can go together. Let no child grow up ashamed of the language of their grandparents. Let no neighbour be treated as lesser because their customs are unfamiliar. Let no tradition that can unite us be buried beneath indifference or poisoned by prejudice. When culture becomes a bridge, our heritage does not merely preserve the past; it becomes a powerful foundation upon which a more respectful, united, and fulfilling future can be built.
