When A People Forget Their Roots, They Lose The Map To Their Future
@When A People Forget Their Roots, They Lose The Map To Their Future
A people who forget where they came from may eventually struggle to know where they are going. Our roots are more than names, festivals, traditional clothing, indigenous languages or ancestral stories. They carry the wisdom, values, identity and experiences that shaped those who came before us. Every generation inherits a cultural treasure, and every generation has a responsibility to decide whether that treasure will be preserved, improved and passed on—or allowed to disappear.
We cannot build a strong future by treating everything from our past as primitive while blindly embracing everything foreign as superior. Our elders may not have had smartphones, artificial intelligence or modern classrooms, yet many possessed wisdom about community, respect, responsibility, craftsmanship, family, resilience and human relationships that technology cannot replace. Culture should not imprison us in the past; it should give us roots strong enough to navigate the future without losing ourselves.
The tragedy is that some young people can imitate cultures they barely understand while struggling to speak their indigenous language, explain their history or appreciate the values that once held their communities together. The answer is not to reject modernity. We need a generation that can code in the morning, speak its indigenous language with pride in the afternoon, embrace innovation without abandoning identity, and compete globally without becoming strangers to its own heritage.
Our children are watching what we celebrate, what we preserve and what we allow to disappear. Let us give them more than buildings, roads and technology; let us give them a heritage worth inheriting. Let us document our stories, teach our languages, preserve our traditions, honour our elders, correct what must be corrected and carry forward what deserves to survive. When a people preserve their roots, they do not merely remember their past; they secure a compass for their future.
