@Your Digital Footprint Is Becoming Your Unspoken Curriculum Vitae

There is a generation walking confidently into tomorrow without realising that tomorrow is already reading yesterday. Every photograph, comment, insult, argument, joke, vulgarity, reckless reaction and careless opinion left online can become part of the evidence of who we were when nobody thought the future was watching. We may delete the post, but we cannot always delete the screenshot. We may outgrow the behaviour, but the internet may preserve the evidence. A moment of foolishness can be forgotten by the person who created it and remembered by the person who later decides whether to open a door for that person. The tragedy is not that we made mistakes; the tragedy is that some of us are manufacturing the evidence that will one day be used to explain why certain doors remained closed.

Young people, attention is cheap; credibility is expensive. Going viral is not the same as becoming valuable. Thousands of followers cannot manufacture character. A trending video cannot substitute for competence. Online popularity cannot resurrect a reputation destroyed by repeated recklessness. We must stop behaving as though the internet is a playground with no consequences. It is increasingly becoming an archive of our choices. Somewhere, someone may be studying our digital behaviour before trusting us with a classroom, a scholarship, a job, a business, a responsibility, a leadership position or a national assignment. The world may not hear our excuses before it sees our evidence.

This does not mean we should become afraid of expressing ourselves. It means we must become deliberate about what we express. Let our platforms carry more than noise. Let them carry our questions, our knowledge, our creativity, our convictions, our work, our humanity and our contribution. Let someone who encounters our name online discover not merely a person desperate to be seen, but a person becoming worthy of being trusted. Before we post, let us ask ourselves a brutal question: If this becomes the first thing the future knows about me, will it introduce me or indict me? Not everything that can be posted deserves to be posted.

One day, the excitement will fade. The likes will disappear into yesterday's notifications. The trend will be replaced by another trend. The crowd will move on. Our name will remain. And when opportunity comes searching for us, it may not ask how entertaining we were at twenty. It may ask what our choices revealed about the person we were becoming. Let us therefore stop treating our digital footprints like footprints in sand. They may be footprints in history. Post nothing today that the person we are fighting to become tomorrow will have to spend years explaining.
