Never Let Your Good Season Make You Look Down on Others
@Never Let Your Good Season Make You Look Down on Others
Life has a way of reminding us that nobody is completely self-made. There are people struggling more than we are, working harder than we are, praying more than we are, living with greater discipline than we are, and yet still facing battles we cannot see. There are people with fewer opportunities who have given more effort, people with greater faith who have endured deeper trials, and people with remarkable abilities whose circumstances have refused to cooperate. Their struggles should teach us humility, not superiority.
Whatever advantages we enjoy today may have been earned through hard work, discipline, sacrifice and persistence. Still, effort is not the only ingredient in the story. There is timing, opportunity, favour, the kindness of others, circumstances beyond our control—and, for those who believe, the grace of God. Therefore, let success make us grateful, not arrogant. The advantaged should never look down on the disadvantaged. The healthy should not mock the sick. The employed should not despise the jobless. The educated should not deride the uneducated. The boss should not maltreat the servant. A person's present condition is not a complete definition of that person's worth, nor a guarantee of our own tomorrow.
Life can change in a twinkle. The weather can shift suddenly; even the climate can become unpredictable. So can human circumstances. The person we overlook today may become the person whose wisdom, kindness or assistance we desperately need tomorrow. The person struggling today may rise tomorrow, while the one enjoying extraordinary ease today may suddenly encounter a season that demands the very compassion they once refused to others. We should therefore treat people with dignity—not merely because of what they are today, but because every human being deserves dignity.
If life is moving unusually fast and smoothly for us, let gratitude speak louder than pride. Remember those for whom nothing seems easy or fast. Share opportunities where we can. Encourage rather than humiliate. Lift rather than ridicule. True success does not need arrogance to announce its arrival. The higher we rise, the more grounded we should become; the more we have, the more generously we should treat those who have less; and the taller we grow, the deeper our humility should become. Humility preserves. Humility multiplies. And sometimes, humility is the wisdom that keeps success from becoming the beginning of our downfall.
