The Mysteries And Ironies Of Life: When The Rain Falls Unequally

@The Mysteries And Ironies Of Life: When The Rain Falls Unequally

Life is a mysterious theatre of contradictions where good things happen to bad people, and terrible things happen to people who have done nothing wrong. The wicked sometimes prosper while the righteous struggle. The poor battle diseases they cannot afford to treat, while the rich and mighty are afflicted with illnesses their fortunes cannot cure. Some children of the poor possess extraordinary brilliance but lack the school fees to unlock their potential, while some children of the wealthy have every educational advantage yet despise the classroom. Some marry early and enjoy marital bliss; others wait endlessly, watching their dreams of companionship dissolve into disappointment. Some who have lived recklessly give birth effortlessly, while responsible couples who have preserved their bodies and built loving homes find themselves battling infertility, fibroids and the agony of childlessness. Some never smoked or drank, yet suffer liver or kidney failure; others abuse their bodies for decades and appear perfectly healthy. The same life that gives one person a gentle breeze can subject another to a devastating storm. The tall and the short, the young and the old, the highly placed and the lowly placed—all are vulnerable. Some carry manageable inconveniences; others are crushed beneath multiple major tragedies. Life does not distribute its burdens according to character, wealth, education, age or social status.

Perhaps one of life's most troubling ironies is that those who pray the longest, fast the hardest and walk most faithfully with God are not necessarily spared the fiercest storms. Some of the most prayerful people are battling terminal illnesses; some of the most righteous are experiencing heartbreaking marital disappointments; some who have spent years serving God are confronted with tragedies that their faith seems unable to prevent. Meanwhile, those who appear distant from God, careless about righteousness or indifferent to spiritual matters sometimes enjoy the very blessings others have prayed and fasted for. Why should cancer strike a poor person who cannot afford treatment? Why should a wealthy person discover that money cannot purchase a cure? Why should the faithful suffer while the seemingly faithless prosper? The Yoruba say, “B’ó ṣe wù Olúwa ló ń ṣ'ola; kò sí ẹni tó lè bí i lérè”—the Lord does as He pleases; no one can question Him. Yet, the mystery of life is not exhausted by this acknowledgement. The rainwater that falls on bitter-leaf plant and makes it bitter is the same water that falls on sugarcane and makes it sweet. The same circumstances can produce different outcomes in different lives. Some suffering arises from our choices, some from injustice, genetics, environmental conditions and social inequalities, while some remain beyond our understanding. Righteousness is not an insurance policy against tragedy, and prosperity is not necessarily proof of divine approval.

What, then, is the way forward? First, stop measuring your life against another person's circumstances. Someone else's marriage, children, wealth, health or achievements do not invalidate your own journey. The fact that another person has received what you are still praying, working or waiting for does not mean your life has lost its worth. Neither should we use another person's suffering to question their righteousness, nor their prosperity to measure our spiritual standing. Prayer is not a contract that obligates God to fulfil every request according to our timetable, and faith does not require us to pretend that pain does not exist. Keep praying, but do not neglect practical action. Keep believing, but permit yourself to grieve. Seek medical attention when ill, pursue knowledge when ignorant, challenge injustice when confronted with it, and seek support when overwhelmed. Resilience is not the denial of pain; it is the determination to keep living meaningfully despite it. Sometimes, what a suffering person needs is not another sermon about praying harder, but a helping hand, a listening ear, medical attention, financial assistance or the assurance that they are not alone. Faith should make us more compassionate, not more judgmental.

Above all, never conclude that your suffering is proof of your worthlessness, nor that another person's prosperity is proof of their superiority. Life can be painfully unequal, but our humanity gives us the responsibility to make it less cruel. If you are enjoying life's sweetness, remember those tasting its bitterness. If you are tasting its bitterness, remember that your present condition is not the complete definition of your existence. Do not allow unanswered prayers to convince you that your life has lost its meaning, or another person's blessings to make you despise your own journey. Keep living, keep growing, keep seeking help, keep believing in possibilities and keep finding meaning in the little victories that survive the storms. We may never understand every mystery of life, but we can refuse to become another person's tragedy. We may not be able to prevent every storm, but we can become a shelter for someone caught in one. Life may not always be fair, but let us never allow its unfairness to make us unfair to one another. Whatever life does to us, let us never lose the humanity that makes us worthy of one another.
