The Youth Who Cannot Govern Their Habits Are Not Ready to Govern Their Society
@The Youth Who Cannot Govern Their Habits Are Not Ready to Govern Their Society
Nigeria does not merely need young people who can challenge leaders; it needs young people who can challenge themselves. It is easy to condemn bad governance while mismanaging our time, abusing our privileges, surrendering to destructive habits, and refusing to take responsibility for our choices. We demand accountability from public officeholders while making excuses for our own failures. The uncomfortable truth is that the first government every young person must learn to lead is the government of self.
How can we demand discipline from our leaders when we cannot discipline our appetites? How can we demand integrity in public office when we cheat in examinations, lie to escape responsibility, or manipulate others for personal gain? How can we condemn corruption while celebrating shortcuts that benefit us? A generation that cannot control its anger, manage its impulses, resist destructive peer pressure, or use digital platforms responsibly risks carrying its weaknesses into the very institutions it hopes to transform. A change of generation without a change of character is merely a change of occupants, not a change of direction.
Youth development must therefore go beyond acquiring certificates, learning digital skills, attending conferences, and occupying leadership positions. It must include the difficult work of building character, emotional intelligence, self-discipline, sound judgement, and personal accountability. Start with the little things: keep your promises, respect time, read beyond social media headlines, control your reactions, spend wisely, learn consistently, and do what is right even when nobody is watching. These habits may not trend online, but they build the kind of person society can trust with influence and responsibility.
Dear young people, the future will not be transformed by age alone, slogans alone, or the replacement of old leaders with young faces. It will be transformed when competence meets character and power meets responsibility. Before demanding a better society, let us become better citizens; before seeking to lead others, let us learn to lead ourselves. The nation we dream of cannot rise above the character of the people building it. The revolution Nigeria needs must begin within us!
