The Drug Culture Among Nigerian Youths: A Dangerous Journey to Self-Destruction

@The Drug Culture Among Nigerian Youths: A Dangerous Journey to Self-Destruction

One of the most disturbing threats to youth development in Nigeria today is the growing menace of drug and substance abuse among young people. What should ordinarily be a generation of energetic minds, promising talents, intellectual possibilities and future leaders is increasingly being exposed to a dangerous culture of substance dependence. From codeine, tramadol, colos, igbo (weeds) and cannabis to the abuse of prescription medications and other psychoactive substances, the situation demands urgent attention. Alarmingly, what some young people now regard as enjoyment, adventure, courage, escape from reality or a demonstration of social sophistication is gradually becoming a pathway to addiction, mental instability, broken dreams and premature death.

The tragedy is that many youths are not necessarily ignorant of the dangers; some simply underestimate the consequences. Peer pressure, curiosity, frustration, unemployment, emotional struggles, family challenges and the desperate desire to belong have become excuses for experimenting with substances. Unfortunately, what begins as occasional experimentation can develop into dependency, gradually taking control of one's decisions, behaviour, relationships and future. No substance can manufacture genuine confidence, restore lost opportunities, solve financial difficulties or provide lasting happiness. A drug-induced feeling of temporary excitement is not fulfilment; it is an illusion that can demand a devastating price.

We must understand that drug abuse does not merely destroy individuals; it weakens families, compromises community safety, frustrates educational aspirations and robs society of productive human resources. A young person who should be acquiring knowledge, developing skills, building character and preparing for leadership may become trapped in a cycle of dependence and self-destruction. Our youths must stop confusing recklessness with boldness, intoxication with enjoyment and addiction with freedom. Anything that gradually takes control of our minds, weakens our judgement and mortgages our future is not a lifestyle worth defending.

To Nigerian youths, the message is unequivocal: refuse the pressure, reject the culture and protect your future. We do not need drugs to become creative, courageous, socially relevant or successful. We need discipline, purpose, knowledge, healthy relationships, productive engagement and the courage to make responsible choices. To parents, educators, religious institutions, community leaders and policymakers, our responsibility goes beyond condemnation; we must create supportive environments, provide guidance, promote awareness and make professional help accessible to those already struggling with addiction. Our youths are too valuable to be sacrificed on the altar of temporary pleasure. Their minds are too precious to be surrendered to substances, and their future is too important to be destroyed by avoidable choices. Let us raise a generation that is high on purpose, elevated by knowledge and intoxicated only by the possibilities of a fulfilled life.

Yours in fulfilment,
