Your Mother Tongue Is Your Identity, Not Your Limitation
@Your Mother Tongue Is Your Identity, Not Your Limitation
Education is not complete when we can think, speak, read and write fluently in a foreign language but struggle to do the same in our mother tongue. Language is more than a communication tool; it is a carrier of identity, culture, history, values and collective wisdom. A child who cannot communicate effectively in the language of their heritage is gradually disconnected from an important part of their cultural roots. True education should broaden our linguistic abilities, not erase our identities. Education should bring us closer to who we are, not make us strangers to our roots.
Our mother tongue is not inferior, outdated or a mark of ignorance. No language is inherently superior to another; what often creates the illusion of superiority is the social, economic and political influence attached to it. English may open international doors, French may create global opportunities, and other foreign languages may expand our horizons, but none should make us ashamed of the language that first connected us to our heritage. No matter how proficient we sound in someone else's language, we remain second-language speakers of that language, however exceptional our fluency may be. Fluency in a foreign language is an asset, not a reason to despise our own.
Parents, schools and educational institutions must deliberately promote mother-tongue literacy. Let children learn to think, read, write and express complex ideas in their indigenous languages while acquiring proficiency in other languages. Let us document our oral traditions, translate knowledge, promote indigenous literature and create learning resources in local languages. When young people understand their roots, appreciate their identity and develop confidence in their cultural heritage, they acquire an important foundation for self-awareness, purposeful living and meaningful contribution to society.
At Project Youth Fulfil (PYoF), we believe that fulfilment is not merely about acquiring certificates, mastering foreign languages or gaining global recognition; it is also about discovering, appreciating and maximising the value of who we are. We cannot pursue global relevance by abandoning our cultural identity, nor can we build a fulfilled generation by teaching our children to be ashamed of their heritage. Speak English confidently, learn other languages proudly, but never become a stranger to your mother tongue. The world should hear our voices without losing our identity!
Yours in fulfilment,
